[Japan Post] Resumption and temporary suspension of acceptance, delivery delays of mail items destined to various countries/territories (Updated on June 30)

Our acceptance of various international mail items has been temporarily suspended due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile, we will resume acceptance of mail items as noted below from July 1.

  • EMS and parcel-post/letter-post items by surface destined to China
  • EMS and parcel-post/letter-post items by air destined to Italy and New Zealand
  • Parcel- post/letter-post items by surface destined to Indonesia
  • For details on the countries and territories to which acceptance of mail is still temporarily suspended as of July 1, please see the appendix below (PDF).

appendix (As of July 1, 2020) (PDF file)

We continue to temporarily suspend acceptance of mail items destined to these countries and territories because their postal operators are still not accepting inbound postal items and/or our transportation performance remains significantly reduced due to reduction of flights from/to Japan.
Meanwhile, although dispatch of United States-bound items that have already been accepted will be completed soon, we continue to temporarily suspend acceptance of various mail items to the United States because we are unable to make any prospect for securing sufficient transportation capability for the time being.
In addition, because of the global reduction of flights, considerable delivery delays are expected for accepted outbound mail items.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. It would be appreciated if you would kindly understand this situation in advance.

    Audio Masterpiece Collections

Listening to excellent pieces of music of great performances and high quality sound-recordings is a blissful moment for all audio enthusiasts.

However, a lot of original analog master tapes, though they contain the greatest performances and high quality sound-recordings of all time in history and hold eternal values, are often buried in archives or storerooms of record companies all over the world without being shed light on their existence.
We have dug them out of archives, and with state-of-the-art techniques, transferred them to SACDs, the best conceivable playback mediums.
It is a great pleasure for us to introduce you the best-sound playback mediums as our "Audio Masterpiece Collections".

These SACDs have been produced in accordance with our convictions that in a certain sense the conclusive music file with ultimate high quality of sound is none other than the original master tape itself because, without any doubt, if it has been kept well-preserved, it must contain a great amount of unspoiled sound information, thus we shall share the joy of listening to such pure and genuine sound of music―― the privilege which is given to exclusively limited persons involved in the recording process. In order to realize such an ideal playback mediums, we successfully digitized the analog master tape, and transferred it to the suitable mediums with no additional processing treatment such as equalizing or sound adjustment―― noises and sound dropouts, which had been attributed to the master tape, were kept intact.

We became at last able to provide audio enthusiasts with the ultimate sound quality that is as close to the original master tape as possible.

Monumental Work of Solti and Vienna Philharmonic
    『Das Rheingold』SACD,
state-of-the-art digital transfer from the discovered Master Tape

The release of the first complete Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen recording, or the Decca Ring, spending almost eight years to complete the whole cycle of four Ring operas, was sensational and widely won enthusiastic praise.

Such a great accomplishment had been done by the devotion of John Culshaw, a pioneering classical record producer for Decca Records, and by the engagement of Sir Georg Solti as a conductor, the Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra and all the celebrated Wagner singers of their age. This complete recording of the Ring was said that it enabled the evocation of, what Culshaw put it, "a theatre of the mind", brought a reality and impact hardly achieved in the opera house: he sought to make recordings that compensated for the lack of the visual element by subtle production techniques, conjuring up the action in the listener's head, that was impossible in live recordings.

Finally Das Rheingold, the first cycle (a preliminary evening) of the Ring recorded in Vienna in 1958, has debuted as one of the Stereo Sound's Audio Masterpiece Collections.

■Master tape used for the SACD

The production master used for this SACD is the safety analog master tape that had been kept for the emergency use and unfortunately got forgotten for a long time.
It had been made by the Decca Record Company in the beginning of the 1970s as a safety master tape, copying directly from the 1/4-inch original analog master tape on a one-to-one basis, and been provided to the King Records in Japan which was the importer and distributor of the Decca records at that time. It would have been used only if any flaws in the metal master prepared for the LP recordings had been found.
But, for its limited usage (only used for the emergency) it had not been on a written record, and consequently, its whereabouts had become unknown. However, thanks to persistent searching by the Universal Music Japan, it was finally discovered and we got the privilege to be given a license by Decca to make a fresh transfer from this safety analog master tape.

The master source currently used by Decca for Solti's Ring transfer is the digital master tape, commonly known as "James Lock Remaster", which was made by Decca mastering engineer James Lock who had assisted John Culshaw on the original Ring sessions.
Assigned by Decca to de-hiss the Ring for the 1997 edition CD, Lock made new 48/24 transfers (PCM/48kHz/24bit) from the original analog tapes, applying processing treatments such as equalizing and noise reduction.
Since the original analog master tapes were too deteriorated to make a new transfer (that was said by Decca), all digital discs and digital files that have been issued since 1997, without any exception, were made by using this "James Lock Remaster" as a source.
Therefore, our SACD is the first and only transfer in the world, digitized from the precious master source that had been stored before remastering was applied.

    ■DSD Recording by Flat Transfer

We have done the digital editing for the SACD in NIPPON COLUMBIA's mastering studio, and made flat transfers from the analog master tapes converting to DSD signal (digital format of SACD) with a sampling rate of 2.8MHz: playback was done on the STUDER A820 Analog Master Recorder, which had been meticulously tuned by the greatest mastering engineer in Japan, Shigeru Buzawa.
With an aim to make a DSD master as close to the analog master tape as possible, the whole system, including cables (digital/analog/AC), was finely tuned, and state-of-the-art equipments were also utilized; Merging Technologies' Pyramix System for conversion; Esoteric Master Clock Generator G01X to regulate clock timing accuracy.
